The principle of engineering is to get more out for less in. It is faster by boat than swimming, the wheel is stronger than the leg and roads are quicker than fields. To achieve it we have to re-organise space and materials for which we need the tools for the job. The same applies to everything else we do or want.  if you look under "more..." in the top line it tells you "about" the sort of engineering help available if you need it. Meantime here are some ideas to get you started, but before we do that you might find visualizing your problems or situations easier if we give you something to compare your work against. So for your information and in no particular order......
 A standard 20' or 6m container has just shy of 28 cubic metres capacity and will hold about a tonne fully loaded per cubic meter, a cubic metre of water weighs a tonne, 16 to 20kgs constant handling is hard work on your own all day, 3 tonnes of anything moved manually needs planning. Your fork truck will do about 125 operations a day(shift) maximum on average. A pallet space is about 1000mm deep x 1200 wide and you normally get two on a beam by 4 high is pretty good and needs about 6m of height to get it in.  You can block stack to about 4m with rigid blocks. You will sacrifice tonnage for accessibility. A mezzanine floor needs a 5m eave height for comfort. You can store 11 tonnes in a 1m square column of storage in a pallet rack and half a tonne a column on a mezzanine floor (plus whatever you can get on the ground below). Trolleys are not much fun over 500kgs, pallet trucks are better. Shelving does not need to be bolted down. Pallet rack does. Door ways and equipment need to be compatible. Measure it twice -  buy it once! You will save about 20% on quality used, new is rarely worth more than 10% of what you paid for it...I know ouch! Don't buy used from unaudited sources. You can get new cheaper than used.

The greater the surplus the investment creates, the more valuable it is to you.
