Hi, I'm Paul..I wrote this after spending £60,000 of my own money and 5 years of toil and tears. Not all of it was great value, though it was a great experience. I am not an expert, just some guy who got lost in the new world order of the internet and paid a lot of money to learn about it the hard way. I hope it helps you and saves you the worry of the insecurity and coping with the stone that houses Excalibur. With this help I am sure the sword will be yours now and help you to cut your way through to the front of your business and take your rightful place on the front line with the rest of us who don't know when to quit either!!
The internet - Straight talk
  1. The internet is a highway of millions of communications - that is all it does - people do the rest, you won't pick anything from your computer screen, except dust. It will help you "pan" for customers and quickly provide accurate data for the "Gold" to "Dross" rate. Many of your customers, like gold, exist in this mix, you will never cut out this process, so don't try, just develop the skill to pan expertly.
  2. I have deliberately left the Weebly tag on the bottom of this site. It is the easiest way to get a free instant website, you can learn as you go really easily and it saves you needing to learn how to guess the Google algorithm to get found, be an SEO expert or learn any more than a few basics to have a really professional looking site - I did this site in one weekend! I have nothing to do with Weebly, but I wish I had found them 5 years ago.
  3. I use the term "Traffic" to sum up your enquiry book - you must have traffic. There are only two ways to generate traffic, place your business in the centre lane of the M1 or  build a motorway through your office. The first is about location and the second is about LOCATING - there are no other ways - really there aren't.
  4. I am not going to talk about location, there are tons of information on that, but LOCATING and HERDING traffic to your business is not so easy. Its The 90:10 rule...90% of your money comes from 10% of your hard work - plus or minus 20%. This third to two thirds business ratio is not to be scorned. I never knew a plant that produced only one seed....I think there is a lesson there.
  5. This is how to get traffic: Be where your customers are, find a whole herd, round them up and take them to a corral and feed them.
  6. You can't see enough people, ring enough people or get lucky enough in one year to ensure a surplus - so don't try, you will crash and burn. Don't expect your sales people too either. You must have a bombproof marketing plan. Work out how many visitors you need to make a sale, how many prospects you need to get a visitor and what it all costs you - if there is anything left over you may be in business - you certainly have a foot hold on the wealth creation ladder and everything after that is practice.
  7. How to do 100,000 quotations a year - build a web page and put your prices, terms and products on it. Now you don't need to do any more quotations to the 70% of people who were never going to buy from you anyway! This leaves all that resource free to work productively with the 30% of people who want you and more importantly the 10% of them who really pay your wages.
  8. Never waste time begging for orders, instead put that effort into the next set of prospects, I tripled my business the day I left the quotations cemetery.
  9. Don't cold call, you'll freeze to death.
  10. Knock 'em dead with your first presentation and you will get the work if it is for you.

Bluebells have a seasonal score - look at the graph 'peaks'. Words with volatile columns need to be avoided, pick words with consistent  performances.
